STEM Leadership (Ceannardas STEM)

The STEM Leadership Programme at Calderglen High School allows passionate pupils to become empowering ambassadors for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.

  

Delivered through the nationally recognized Young STEM Leader Programme (YSLP), this course gives pupils the opportunity to build essential leadership skills while inspiring peers, primary pupils, and the wider school community.

 

Whether mentoring younger pupils, running STEM clubs, or organizing school-wide science events, our Young STEM Leaders play a vital role in creating an inclusive and vibrant STEM culture.

What is covered in the course?

The course focuses on developing leadership through active, hands-on participation rather than traditional classroom exams. Pupils plan, lead, and evaluate a series of STEM activities, events, or interactions throughout the academic year.

 

Discovering STEM: Researching STEM pathways, challenging stereotypes, and promoting the value of STEM in modern society.

Planning & Delivery: Designing and running interactive activities, practical experiments, or workshops for younger pupils (e.g., S1/S2 classes or partnering primary schools).

Leadership & Reflection: Managing projects, guiding team members, and reflecting on personal leadership development through a portfolio logbook.

  

Pupils build an e-portfolio or logbook detailing their leadership journey. There is no Qualification Scotland (QS) written exam.

Participating in the STEM Leadership Programme equips pupils with high-value transferable skills that stand out on university, college, and employment applications:

 

  • Leadership & Teamwork: Delegating tasks, motivating group members, and leading teams toward shared goals.

  • Communication & Public Speaking: Presenting scientific concepts clearly and enthusiastically to diverse audiences.

  • Project & Time Management: Organising resources, assessing safety/risk, and delivering events on schedule.

  • Problem Solving & Adaptability: Thinking on your feet when practical activities or demonstrations need troubleshooting.

Accreditation 

The Young STEM Leader Programme (YSLP) offers a flexible, step-by-step progression pathway that spans primary school through to S6 and beyond.

 

Delivered in partnership with SSERC (Scottish Schools Education Research Centre) and Qualifications Scotland (QS), learners can progress through levels aligned directly with the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF).

 

Successful completion grants students an official, industry-endorsed certificate in leadership and STEM competencies, validating both their practical project work and theoretical understanding. 

Progression

  • Enhanced University and Career Readiness: Pupils build a portfolio of practical achievements, collaborative projects, and leadership experiences that stand out on university applications, and future CVs.

  • Mentorship and Networking Opportunities: By engaging with peer-to-peer mentoring and connecting with visiting professionals from cutting-edge STEM industries, pupils gain valuable industry insights and expand their professional network early on.
