Parents and carers play a vital role in pupil achievement. You can support your young person's progress by:

• Checking Google Classroom or Achieve regularly for assignments and homework, as well as revision resources.
• Encouraging structured revision using Qualification Scotland (QS) past papers and mark schemes as assessments approach.
• Ensuring that pupils attend supported study sessions that are on offer by the Science Department. 
• Ensure they arrive at science lessons with their materials, stationery and a calculator. Encourage your child to bring their scientific calculator to every science lesson—relying on mobile phones is not permitted in class or exams.

National 4 Science

This qualification is designed to provide an engaging, hands-on introduction to the world of science. Pupils will develop their knowledge through practical work and real-world contexts. 

 

The course has the following units to connect science to everyday experience:

 

• Fragile Earth: Pupils will look at topics such as energy production, finite resources, recycling, and how science is working to protect ecosystems and promote sustainability.
• Human Body: This unit covers aspects of health and hygiene, the effects of lifestyle choices on body systems, and basic physiological measurements.
• Applications of Science: Pupils will explore practical applications in science and telecommunications, seeing how scientific principles are put into practice in the real world.

   

Pupils that successfully complete the National 4 Science course can progress onto the National 5 Laboratory Science course.

National 5 Laboratory Science 

This Skills for Work qualification allows pupils to develop a broad understanding of the scientific workplace and build a strong foundation of practical laboratory techniques. As a Skills for Work qualification, this course targets the employability skills valued by science-based employers.

• Working in a Laboratory: This unit focuses on health and safety legislation, risk assessments, safe handling of chemicals, and maintaining equipment.
• Practical Skills: In this unit, pupils develop skills in using standard scientific equipment from Chemistry, Biology, and Physics. Pupils will carry out titrations, prepare standard solutions, perform filtration and distillation, and analyse chemical, biological and radioactive samples.
• Careers in Science: Pupils explore the range of career opportunities available in science industries in Scotland and beyond. Pupils will research job roles, qualifications, and the vital contributions scientists make to different sectors, including pharmaceuticals, medicine and biotechnology.
• Practical investigation: This unit brings together all the scientific knowledge, health and safety awareness, and analytical skills pupils have built up across the course. The pupils will perform an independent scientific investigation.
