Calderglen High School

S1 John Muir Award

Calderglen High is proud to offer the S1 John Muir Award, a programme designed to help S1 pupils develop confidence, curiosity and a sense of connection to the natural world. Through structured activities and guided reflection, learners build practical skills while also strengthening their wellbeing and motivation to take part in their local community.

The S1 John Muir Award supports interdisciplinary learning by bringing together learning from across the curriculum. Pupils may explore topics such as environment and sustainability, local geography, responsible citizenship, and science-based observation, all while applying what they learn in real-world contexts. This approach helps learners see how different subjects connect and supports a more meaningful, joined-up education.

Just as importantly, the programme develops meta-skills that will benefit pupils throughout secondary school and beyond. Learners practise planning, goal-setting, teamwork and communication, alongside skills such as critical thinking and reflective learning. For parents, this means your child can gain experiences that build capability, resilience and a positive attitude to lifelong learning.
