Interdisciplinary Learning
At Calderglen High, we believe learning works best when it feels connected. That’s why we ensure interdisciplinary learning is presented in a range of contexts across the school experience.
In S1 through the John Muir Award, and S3 through the Youth Philanthropy Initiative, we work with national organisations to demonstrate how their learning can positively impact their community.
In S2 we bring together different subjects so your child can see how ideas link across the curriculum in our flagship experience. This week long immersive programme invites pupils to engage with a project that challenges them to demonstrate their prior learning whilst supporting the transition into S3.
Our S3 Masterclasses provide opportunities where learners can shape the learning and teachers have the freedom to respond to pupil interests, blending prior learning from across the curriculum and exploring new ideas.
Along the way, young people are developing meta-skills like critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and adapting their approach when they meet something new. It’s the kind of learning that helps students feel confident because they can see how skills transfer from one subject to another.
We also know that parents want to understand the “why” behind the approach. Interdisciplinary learning gives students a richer context for what they study—showing how knowledge is used in the wider world, not just for exams.
