S2/4/5 - Supporting Your Child With Subject Options & Future Pathways
Dear Parent/Carer,
As we approach an important milestone in your child’s secondary education, I am writing to provide you with information and resources to help navigate the upcoming subject choice process.
Making these decisions is an exciting opportunity for our young people to begin shaping their own learner journey. We understand, however, that this can also be a daunting time for both students and their families. Our goal is to ensure that every pupil chooses a curriculum that reflects their interests, plays to their strengths, and keeps their future career options open.
To support you in having meaningful conversations at home, we have curated several key resources that provide clarity on the Scottish education system, qualification levels, and career links:
- Calderglen High School Options Hub This is our school-specific portal where you can find detailed information on the subjects currently available, course descriptors, and the specific progression pathways unique to our curriculum.
- The SCQF Guide for Parents and Carers The Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) helps you understand the "level" of different qualifications. This site explains how Highers, National 5s, and Foundation Apprenticeships compare and how they help your child progress.
- My World of Work: Option Choices Created by Skills Development Scotland, this interactive tool allows students to input different subject combinations to see which career paths they might lead to, helping them make informed, forward-thinking decisions.
- Skills Development Scotland (SDS) School Services This page outlines the professional career guidance available within the school. It explains how our Careers Advisors work with pupils to develop their career management skills throughout the options process.
This week, pupils have attended or will attend options assemblies, and will receive further guidance through PSE (Personal and Social Education) lessons . We encourage you to explore these websites together and discuss how your child’s choices align with their aspirations.
If you have any specific questions regarding the options process, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s Pupil Support/Guidance teacher.
Yours sincerely,
Lynsey Clark
